Hill roads and national highways need retaining walls that tolerate settlement, slopes that stay put through the monsoon and protection from falling rock. Gabion gravity walls, reinforced-soil embankments and double-twisted rock-fall drapery are the standard answers on NH, SH and PMGSY projects across Uttarakhand, Himachal and the North-East.
Railway embankments and cuttings carry dynamic loads and cannot afford movement. Gabion toe walls and revetments protect embankment slopes; reinforced soil units allow steeper, narrower formations; chain link mesh secures the right-of-way.
Flexible, free-draining gabion structures are ideal for rivers that change course every monsoon. Revet mattresses line banks and beds, gabion boxes build spurs, guide bunds and toe walls, and launching aprons protect against scour at bridges.
Canals, distributaries and drops need linings that resist flow and settlement without cracking. Revet mattresses and gabion drop structures last longer than lean concrete on soft, expansive soils and are easy to repair.
Hydro-electric projects use gabions for coffer dams, spillway and tailrace aprons, diversion channel protection and the access-road slope works that keep the site reachable through the monsoon.
Landslide-prone slopes are stabilised with a combination of rock-fall drapery mesh at the face, gabion toe walls at the base and reinforced soil reconstruction where the slope has failed. Mesh systems are installed quickly with minimal cutting.
